Introducing Krypton: A Free WiFi SMS Application For iPhone

August 5th, 2008

That’s right! It’s finally here, Krypton, our free wifi SMS application has finally launched and is available for you all to enjoy. Krypton is a new and improved version of an app we released last year.

Say goodbye to DurgleSender, it is no more as a result of Krypton being superior to it in every way. We would like to thank the users of the app for sending in your suggestions, we have incorporated all of your suggestions for DurgleSender into Krypton and we feel that it has made this app the compelling software that it is. We would also like to announce that even though today was the first day the app was available, and that this blog was not yet posted to inform you all of it’s availability, that over 3000 SMS messages were sent today alone using Krypton! That is a phenominal number! So, we would like to thank you all for using our app and making it’s first day, as Borat would say, “GREAT SUCCESS!”.

Masochism, code, and clients

July 23rd, 2008

So, I’ve been working a lot lately. I have had no time whatsoever to do anything but work. It really sucks to be a broke web designer, I’ve been building websites for people for pretty much nothing just so I can pay the bills. I can’t tell you how many time in the past 3 months that Mary and I have had to sell our personal belongings in order to get food or gas. I think my problem is that I have been selling myself short. My design skills are pretty top-notch, and I write really clean code. All of this has led me to the conclusion that I have been doing it wrong. How much of it? All of it. I have been attempting to run a business and have been under quoting clients and investing myself too much into what I wanted each site to be without properly analyzing the cost, time, and effort needed to pull off “what I want” for the clients website to look like. This has resulted in exactly my dilemma… I’m broke, overloaded with work to compensate for my financial situation, and way past deadline on all of my projects which has lead to a handful of angry clients.

I am writing this entry so that other upstart designers do not put themselves in my situation. I am also writing this for myself so that I remember that I am doing this to myself. Sure, some of it can be attributed to needy clients who don’t understand the concept of a mockup and insist on giving countless design changes after the fact expecting you to work for free… But, at the same time, it is our fault for allowing the situation to happen in the first place. It was our decision to charge $2000 for a website that should have cost $10000 just to ensure that we get the client in the first place.

I have been learning a lot of lessons lately about saving and making that extra buck just for the sake of either. You know what I’ve discovered? That neither are worth it in the end. Even in the best case scenarios, even if you really needed to save/make that little bit… In the end, it’s just nor worth it not to go all the way with something, nor is it worth it to underestimate your service. I guess what I’m talking about can be considered a form of masochism. Do not sell yourself short, pay more for quality, and charge more for it as well.

Durgle Blog Revamp

Hello everyone! I know you probably didn’t read my old blog, it got like 0 hits per year because I never updated it. Well, I deleted the old crap and have decided to start with a clean slate and a more formal blog style. I’ll probably be using this blog to post up my design achievements from time to time, but I am thinking it’ll be more focused on random ranting and reviews of various web software and other utilities I use throughout my daily life as a web designer. Well, that’s about it for this post… Enjoy!
